Hotel Castello di Petroia is a very beautiful IX century authentic medieval fortress.  This 1000 year old Fortresses' claim to fame is that it is the birth place of the famous Federiko da Montefeltro (Duke of Urbino).  The views from every aspect of the hotel are stunning.  Views than inspired Piero della Francesca and Perugino and are recognisable in their work.  The location offers painters a magnificent landscape to paint.  The hotel is surrounded by 800 hectares of land with many marked walking trails and horseriding can be organised.  The hotel is extremely comfortable with a large swimming pool.  Each room is beautifully decorated with en suite facilities and has double doors to ensure a peaceful night's sleep.  The public areas include an interesting library, comfortable sitting areas and a wonderful terrace.  When we saw the covered roof terrace on the very top of the castle with its magnificent outlook we knew this would make the perfect base for a painting holiday.  The entrance to the castle is via vast locked gates, there are lots of stone walls, medieval windows and a wonderful terrace where most meals will be eaten.  When weather doesn't permit al fresco dining, guests will use the cosy candle lit restaurant.  The restaurant is very well known for its excellent food as the hotel chef, Massimo Carleo, trained under the famous chef Gualtiero Marchesi.
