CHARLES  MITCHELL PAINTING  TUTOR

Charles was super in trying to draw out the artist within! - Lake Garda 2017

"I enjoyed our tutor, Charles Mitchell.  He is one of the best teachers I've had and I've had over 30 experiences (demos, workshops, classes) since 2012".

"Charles was an excellent instructor. He not only helped me enormously with my understanding of how to use watercolor, but also provided insightful comments on how to develop the composition and approach the piece from a more abstract perspective - just what I was looking for".

"Charles was probably the best tutor I’ve had on a Painting holiday. A gentleman and very helpful. His observations/suggestions for improvement were always spot on". Robert August 2016

"Charles was an excellent tutor (and a really nice man) Useful suggestions and hints but boiled down to “It’s your picture so do what satisfies you”.  Richard August 2016

"Charles is patient, kind, wise and very knowledgeable.  He seemed unflappable and genuinely happy to be with us. I believe I did my best work ever with his excellent guidance". Ria August 2016

Charles is an experienced artist and teacher who has taught in specialist art colleges and universities in the UK and overseas. He was Dean of the Faculty of the Arts and Humanities at the University of Cumbria before he moved to live in Italy five years ago.

The media he uses regularly to make large pictures on paper and canvas are pastels, watercolour and acrylics and he can offer support and tuition in all these media.

His exhibitions have toured with the Royal Shakespeare Company and been shown in public galleries in the UK, Italy and South Africa. His regular themes include making pictures about water, landscape and people engaged in activities they enjoy.

A new landscape exhibition based on the writings of Dante, The Roads to Paradise, was shown at Serra Sant’ Abbondio last summer.

Charles has been busy with three new exhibitions in the Marche region of Italy during the past twelve months. The White Peacock was shown at Cagli, Ritratti, an exhibition of portraits was shown at Serra Sant’ Abbondio, and Coro, portraits of people singing, was shown at Pergola.

Question:  "What can I expect from the week?"  Read Charles' reply:

"I would like you to have a thoroughly enjoyable painting holiday followed by a spectacular visit to the opera and be able to go home feeling that you have learned things that will enable you to further develop your interest and your skills in drawing and painting media.

Whether you are a beginner wishing to experiment with different media or a more experienced artist who wants to develop specific skills in your chosen medium, I’ll want to help you identify and develop your abilities in a lovely setting that provides lots of visual stimulation and that will provide plenty of opportunities to explore the representation of water, landscape, picturesque built environments, wildlife and people.

On each day in the first half of the week I’ll offer the group an introduction to different media and subject matter and then I’ll work with individuals to help you achieve an outcome that I hope will inspire you to further investigation with the media and the subject.

During the second half of the week I’ll work with individuals to help develop finished pieces that will give you the confidence to develop your painting and drawing abilities when you return home.  I look forward to getting to know you".  Charles
