Michael Grey Jones
Michael
Grey Jones is our new tutor for the 2008 season
Michael was, for a few years, a parttime tutor at Eton
College Drawing School having been the "Artist in Residence"
at Oundle
Public School in Northants. During this time he was steadily
building a solid reputation as a professional working painter which
was the challenge he set himself on graduating from the Royal
Academy School London in 1977. He won a much coveted three year
painting scholarship to the Royal Academy, one of only six awarded
nationally each year.
Michael has held several one man show in Maidstone, Oundle and
Eton, and has exhibited regularly on open shows such as The
Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal
Watercolour Society and The
Royal Society of British Artists where he was recently elected
a member.
There have been many important prizes along the way including the
Jeffrey Archer award at the Watercolur Society and the top prize
at the Sunday Times/Singer & Friedlander watercolour competition
which takes place every year at the Mall Galleries.
Michael works on the spot whenever possible but with paintings
taking sometimes six or eight weeks to complete, a certain amount
of additional work has to be done in the studio.
The choice of medium is always dictated by the subject. Oils, Acylic,
Gouache or Watercolur or even when necessary a mixture, typically
Gouache with Watercolour, or Oils over Acylic. He's happy to bend
the rules from time-to-time.
