"A quintessentially Tuscan town that hides a fascinating surprise" by Nigel Richardson, Travel Writer for The Telegraph - 10th September 2016

"The Italian town of Cortona, 70 miles south east of Florence, is a standard issue slice of Tuscan loveliness, with hilltop location, picturesquely crumbling palazzi and alfresco antipasti, not to mention the Britons in Boden scanning estate agents’ windows. What’s unexpected is that tucked in its backstreets is a museum so extensive and impressive that Cortona feels like a variation on that advertising slogan for the V&A in the Eighties: an ace museum with quite a nice town attached".

We have created a studio in Borgo San Pietro which is also a base for guests to come to make tea or coffee whenever they want.  This has proved a great space for storage of materials and a perfect place to work in when it rains.  Painting lessons will take place around the hotel.  On one morning guests will be taken to a hilltop cheese farm famous for its production of Pecorino cheese "Podere il Casale" to capture that quintessential Tuscan view which can be had here.  There will be a tour of the cheese making facilities followed by lunch.  One day guests will be taken by Louise, your guide to visit the monastery "Le Celle" founded by Saint Frances and to visit the Etruscan town of Cortona.  The afternoon excursion will be to Arezzo which is steeped in history.  Louise will take guests to The Church of St. Francis to see the Pierro Della Francesco frescoes "Legend of the True Cross" and also a tour of the town.  On Saturday 10th June guests will be treated to the spectacle of a medieval procession followed by a flag flying contest in the centre of Cortona.

THE HOLIDAY WAS A GREAT SUCCESS

"I thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.  The one-to-one help and tuition from the hotel chef was both fun and informative. The guides on the excursions to Cortona and nearby monastery, to Siena and to the Avignonese Winery were all very knowledgeable, informative and clear in their explanations. The excursions themselves were well-chosen, and the winery visit was particularly spectacular! The hotel facilities and grounds, including swimming pool, were excellent and without exception the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. The provision of taxis and minibuses was excellent. All in all, the holiday was a great success and I hope to be able to take part in a further Painting in Italy holiday and will in particular look out for activities - cooking in particular - for a non-painting partner". - John, Cortona September 2016

ALREADY BOOKED FOR NEXT YEAR

"I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and ambience of the hotel that was set in beautiful countryside. Our tutor Liz went out of her way to ensure that we were all happy with our painting and gave us so much information about the Italian way of life and the surrounding area. I enjoyed it so much that have already booked my holiday with you for next year". Jill van Looy - Cortona September 2015

IT WAS VERY GOOD VALUE

"Extremely well organised, everything went smoothly and we didn't have to think about anything! The restaurants and excursions were excellent and we would not have found them if we had been independent travellers. The company and tuition was great and although the holiday appeared quite expensive when I first booked, everythin g was included and it was very good value. An excellent holiday for a single person".Cortona  September 2015

WELL ORGANISED

"well organized and a good balance of tuition and wonderful excurtions with delicious Italian food and wine". Cortona September 2015

This painting vacation in Tuscany is very suited for people travelling alone or friends/partners wanting to come on the holiday together but do different activities as cooking tuition is available 3 mornings a week to non-painting partners.  Cortona has been made famous by the book "Under the Tuscan Sun" written by Francis Mayes and the film starring Diane Lane.  Cortona is known as the "jewel of Tuscany".  This Etruscan town was in existance before Rome and is filled with remnants of its Etruscan past. It has managed to maintain its historical buildings and narrow cobbled streets but due to its sophisticated visitors it has high end shops as well as local artisan shops with pottery, art and paper products which the area is famous for.  Cortona has a world famous Etruscan museum and many beautiful churches containing works by famous Renaissance painters such as Luca Signorelli.  Guests will be collected from Rome or Perugia airport.  The hotel is situated just 4 kms from Cortona and so its a short taxi ride to the town whenever guests wish to visit.  At night guests will eat al fresco in the hotel's conservatory with Cortona twinkling on the hill above.   Florence is a 1 hour 20 minute train journey from Cortona and so easily reachable in a day.  The excursions will be to Cortona and Arezzo.

Painting tuition will take place on five mornings during the week.  Guests are free to continue painting in the afternoon or relax around the pool and hotel grounds.  The tutor is available for consultation at the end of each afternoon.  We have a painting studio to work from in bad weather (doesn't occur very often in Italy).  As well as painting around the hotel ,guests will be taken to the town of Cortona to paint ane to "Le Celle", a local monastery.  There will be excursions to the town of Cortona and to the beautiful town of Arezzo to see the Piero della Francesca frescoes "Legend of the true Cross" featured in the film "The English Patient".  Both these excursions will be lead by a brilliant guide and historian.

Lunch and dinners will be served with excellent wine in the hotel or in a local restaurants.
