'Just wanted to say a big thank you for the wonderful holiday I have just had.  Sarah Miatt, I have to say was a really inspirational instructor and I can't believe how much I accomplished in just one week. She also looked after all of us exceptionally well'.  Chris - Saragano June 2016

SARAH MIATT - PAINTING TUTOR

Sarah was born in Hamburg, Germany to English parents, moving to the south of England two years later where she spent her childhood.  After graduating in Fine Art at Sheffield University, Sarah moved to Holland where she taught life drawing and exhibited in Amsterdam. Six years later she moved back to London and worked in the Wapping Studios in the east end, taking part in the “Last Wapping Show”.  Sarah then married Jonathan and they moved immediately to Italy.  They settled in a small rural hamlet near Cortona in Tuscany.

Each year Sarah exhibits somewhere in Tuscany or Umbria and has for the last 10 years exhibited regularly at “Galleria Elle Arte” in Palermo, Sicily. Apart from these regular appointments she has also had one woman shows in France and the USA. The main source of her inspiration, as it has been for many artists, is the Tuscan landscape. However in this case, that which lies below the surface holds much more interest. In a land under constant human habitation for three millennia the layers of civilization have left a wealth of information going back to the time of the ancient Etruscans and beyond. A people as enigmatic as to their origins as they were in their art, Sarah’s personal journey in search of Etruria has led to archaeological sites and museums throughout the Italian peninsular and its islands.

A commitment to art education has led her to lead a one woman voluntary program, teaching art in local schools and the founding of "Cortona International Arts & Cultural Association"  which organizes exhibitions, art classes and workshops.

INSPIRATIONAL INSTRUCTOR

'Just wanted to say a big thank you for the wonderful holiday I have just had.

MOST ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY

‘It was a very relaxing week with good food and great company. Sarah has inspired me to get painting again after so many years (my husband is delighted!) and I enjoyed the balance of tuition and rest. It was great to be taken out on afternoon trips and dinner in different locations. Overall, it was a most enjoyable week’. - Saragano June

SARAH MADE MY VACATION A HUGE SUCCESS

"Sarah is an amazing person and gives 200 percent into everything she does. She went well above the scope of instruction and took great pains to make sure each guest was having their needs met. I liked her approach to tuition, I also like that there are other art materials to try, especially the opportunity to experiment with dry point etching.and printmaking. Sarah is very good at being flexible for the guests that have different artistic directions or have special needs. She really made my vacation a huge success".  - Montefalco June

APPRECIATED THE CARE YOU TOOK

"Oh my gosh, learning about the capital city of Umbria, Assisi, and its history, was marvelous. We fortunately had Marco, an enthusiastic historian to accompany us during our tour of the beautiful Basilica of Saint Francis. Similarly, Visiting Bevagna ( Mevania, the Etruscan-Oscan settleman) was equally interesting and the Medieval Festival, exciting. Dinner, in Ristorante, Oscar, was superb! Most of all, I loved the attention Sarah was able to afford us, as the painting group was smaller and thus she was able to devote more individual time to us. Sarah was ever present, and very devoted to all guests regardless of whether they were " painters " or not.  It was a wonderful trip and you were truly a gracious hostess. Thank you. I look forward to future trips." - Cortona and Montefalco (2 weeks) June

Question:  "What can I expect from the week?".  Read Sarah's reply:

"I would hope to make this holiday enjoyable for beginners and more experienced artists alike. We never stop learning from each other. One of the great aspects of being with a group of fellow artists is that we all have something to impart.  I will be teaching in  oils*, chalk pastels, watercolour and, pen and ink. There will also be the opportunity to experiment with dry point printing. A certain amount of serendipity is involved here and the excitement of lifting up the paper and seeing the results is reason enough to give it a try!

For complete beginners we can  start off exploring  the basic form and perspective of the landscape in a chosen medium, pencil, charcoal ink etc. Some of you will already be acquainted with your chosen painting medium and want to jump straight into the beautiful Tuscan landscape. Though spending time doing tonal sketches (chiaro scuro) can be useful to accustom one to the strong  light here.  I will be demonstrating  the technique of colour “blocking in" of base notes for those interested .This can be enormously helpful, bringing depth to oil paintings, water colours and pastels alike, to capture the vivid Mediterranean colours.

Teaching  will take place  every morning until lunch time and I will then be available after siesta at around 4 o'clock in the afternoon. The week can be as intense or as relaxed  as you decide to make it, knowing I will  be available for discussion and guidance throughout the day.  My goal is to help you find your own style, rather than impose one.  Creativity, while intensely personal, flowers in the company of friends. Often around the table with a glass of wine".
