Programme D

Destination: Pienza, Tuscany
Hotel: Relais Il Chiostro di Pienza (4 star)
www.relaisilchiostrodipienza.it
Programme: Painting Tuition
Dates:  17th June and 2nd September 2012
Price: £1,399.00 + £180 single person supplement.  Includes 7 nights’ half board accommodation, excursions and wine tasting and transfers from Perugia airport.  Wine,  soft drinks and coffee are included with the evening meal.  Non-painting partners welcome (10% discount).

Before 1460 Pienza was the humble little village of Corsignano but in that year Pope Pius decreed that the town of his birth was to be glorified into a city of art which he modestly renamed after himself.  Pius commissioned Bernardo Rossellino to design a cathedral, palace and central piazza.  Relais Il Chiostro di Pienza was a 15th century convent and is situated in the heart of Pienza with beautiful views over the Orcia valley.  In 1996 Pienza was selected by UNESCO to become a member of Global Heritage.  We have made this programme half board as the town (on the doorstep of the hotel) has many bars and trattorias for lunch.   This will enable those that don’t like two heavy meals a day to eat what they want.  The hotel itself offers painting opportunities  but there are also many things to paint in the town.

We have made this programme half board so that our guests have the freedom to have just a panini (sandwich) for lunch or a full three-course lunch if they prefer.  This gives guests more time to paint, draw or explore the town.  Guests will eat together in the evenings.

The gardens were designed by Iris Origo and her husband.  The garden grew gradually, between 1925 and 1939. The house is surrounded by a formal Italian garden, which is divided into geometrical ‘rooms’ by box hedges with lemon trees in terracotta pots. Travertine stairs lead to the rose garden and a winding wisteria-covered pergola bordered by lavender hedge. Gentle informal terraces climb up the hill, where cherry trees, pines and cypresses grow among wild broom, thyme and rosemary, and a long cypress avenue leads to a 17th-century stone statue. Through the wood, a path joins the garden and the family cemetery, considered one of Pinsent's best creations.
17.00:  Leave La Foce.  On the way back we will visit the Monastry of Sant’Anna where we will hopefully be able to listen to the monks sing a Gregorian Chant.
