As with the Painting in Italy courses the main thrust of the four days is on the spot painting. Guests will need warm clothes and along with their paint materials a folding seat (the latter is not essential). There are contingency plans if the weather is too wet or cold for painting outside.
All evening meals including wine and coffee will be served in the restaurant of the hotel. Transport, lunches and other expenses are not included in the above price.
Sunday 18th April
Guests arrive in the hotel
18.30: Meet John in the lobby of the hotel.
John Booth will give an introductory talk in the hotel about the course objectives, the Norwich School and the painters who have made the East Anglian landscape famous.
19.30: Dinner in the hotel.
Monday 19th April
8.00 – 9.00 : Breakfast
10.00 We leave for the short walk to the cathedral. We spend
the morning painting and drawing in the cloisters (the
largest in England and under cover!) If it is very cold we
will work in the cathedral.
13.00 A light lunch in the cathedral refectory.
14 .00 Guests continue with their work, visit the market or look round the town exploring some of its churches. (Norwich has more medieval churches in its walls than any city north of the Alps)
19.30 Dinner at The Maid’s Head Hotel
Tuesday 20th April
8 – 9.30 Breakfast is served
9.30 We leave for the train station to take the famous Bittern
Line to the North Norfolk coast. After a half hour train
journey we arrive at Cromer. This is a very interesting
Edwardian seaside town. We paint the pier and
the beach from the cliff tops. There are under
cover places if the weather is bad.
13.00 Lunch is served at the Rocket Café. This is above the Lifeboat museum on the cliffs with spectacular views of the North Sea.
14.30 The afternoon is spent painting or drawing or looking
round the town.
16.30 The train leaves Cromer Station for Norwich.
19.30 Dinner at the hotel
Wednesday 21st April
8 – 9.30 Breakfast is served
10.00 We return to the cathedral and the close with its
gatehouses and fine buildings either to continue our
Monday work or search for fresh inspiration.
13.00 Lunch at St Benidict’s Restaurant in Lower St Giles, a
short walk from the cathedral.
14.30 A free afternoon to be spent relaxing, shopping or
painting and drawing.
19.30 Dinner in the hotel.
Thursday 22nd April
8.00 – 9.30 Breakfast is served
10.00 We leave for the short walk to the Castle Museum. This
will provide painting and drawing material for the day.
The Norman castle with its monumental interior is one
feature but there are wonderful paintings and artefacts
as well as a comprehensive collection of stuffed birds
and animals.
13.00 A light lunch in the museum restaurant
14.00 We continue work or spend the afternoon exploring the
city.
18.00 We meet for a drink to review our work with comments
from our painting tutor.
19.30 Farewell dinner at the hotel.
Friday 23rd April
8 – 9.30 Breakfast is served
After breakfast guests depart.
